How to build better business relationships

Posted on: July 18th, 2017 by Katie Fitzpatrick No Comments

There are lots of ways to get to know your customers better.

Here are our favourite ways to get to know customers. Take a look and if you try some out yourself, let us know how you get on.

  • Attend customers’ product launches, socials and events.
  • Instead of always liaising over the phone or email, meet them for a coffee to discuss projects or just for an informal chat.
  • Ask about their day or weekend. You might discover you share the same hobby.
  • Invite them to your networking events and business seminars.
  • Ask for feedback on your products and services.
  • Connect with clients on social media and you’ll gain an insight into their lives.

Our Print Evangelist said, “after taking part in the Chatsworth 10k run, I noticed on Facebook that a customer had been there too. When I got back to the office, I dropped her a line to see how she got on. This provided some common ground – something to talk about other than work, which I think is really important. I think people appreciate some light relief in their work day. Since then, we’ve organised to go for lunch to discuss our running experiences and race calendar.

Another client often posts photographs on social media of their dog. I love dogs so, whenever I see or speak to them, I always ask how they are first and then, “how’s Sid?” (their dog). I’ve even offered to dogsit!”

Our Artwork Avenger, Lee, said, “product and event support is key. I think a great example is when we attend our own customers’ events. Most recently and to name just a few examples, we’ve attended a customer’s open garden event, we make a concerted effort to spend money at our clients’ restaurants and shops and we get involved with charity events and fundraising.”

So what are you waiting for? Go that extra mile and see where it takes you and your business.

Here are a few questions we are asked the most:

Q: What’s your minimum order quantity? Can I have one of something?

“There are some items like large posters and exhibition stands, which can be produced as one-offs. Business cards and leaflets just aren’t cost effective to print individually. But, if you let us know what you’d ideally like, we can work around your budget.”

Q: I’ve been offered some last minute exhibition space – can you print quickly?
“Of course. Business cards, posters, leaflets and some brochures can be printed rapidly. The sooner you let us know the better, but by working together, there’s always something we can do.”

Q: Why do you have unusual job titles? What exactly is a Print Evangelist?
“Why not have a funky title? It helps us stand out from the crowd. The name, ‘Print Evangelist’ is simply a great way to express our enthusiasm for providing great quality print and helping our clients.”

Q: Do you just print brochures and leaflets or can you print promotional items too?
“Absolutely, our order book is varied. We print umbrellas, mugs, pens through to signage, large graphics and exhibition equipment. We love a challenge – so the more unusual the better.”

Q: Why should I use a company like Essential Print Services when I can get business cards for free off the internet?

“There’s nothing wrong with buying free print off the internet but what impression will that give to your potential customers? You get what you pay for but, quality doesn’t have to mean expensive. So, before you confirm your order with a faceless internet print provider, call us for smarter, better, fresher print.”

There’s no such thing as a silly question, only one that is not asked, so if you have a question for the Print Evangelist or Print Angels, simply email printangels@essentialprintservices.co.uk

Business woman, Yvonne Gorman is Derby’s Leading Lady

Posted on: April 1st, 2017 by Yvonne Gorman No Comments

In April, our very own Derby born and bred, Yvonne Gorman was featured in Derbyshire Life magazine as a ‘Leading Lady’. For those who missed it, here’s the full report:

INTRO:

Yvonne started Essential Print Services in April 2011 and now leads a small team of Print Angels, on a mission to raise the standards of quality and service within the printing industry. Based on Pride Park, the company offers a range of printing services – large and small – from business cards, flyers and brochures, through to signage and exhibition graphics.

Heavily involved in the local business community, including several networking groups, Yvonne has been crowned ‘Small Business Saturday UK champion’ – selected as one of 10 UK entrepreneurs, tasked to encourage people to support small, independent businesses. In 2016, Yvonne won the award for ‘Inspirational Businesswoman of the Year – Derby & Derbyshire’ and she is also a trustee of the Maria Hanson Foundation (Me & Dee Charity).

  • What was your first job?: PR Assistant at BHPR. Donna, who owns BHPR, took a chance on me and the rest they say is history. I have a lot to thank her for.
  • What is the best part of your current job? Helping others; it could be connecting two people who go on to do business together or, supporting a charity with free print or, inspiring someone to start their own business. Running my business is hard work but, so rewarding.
  • What’s your best piece of business advice? Concentrate on what you’re good at and delegate the rest. I genuinely enjoy everything I do so, I’m very guilty of wanting to do everything myself. When I employed the first member of staff in 2012 – a year after I formed the business, I had to learn to delegate quickly because, if I couldn’t learn to let go, my business would never grow. Thankfully, I now have a whole team of people who are great at helping the business to provide great print and exceptional service.
  • If you could go back and tell your 13-year-old self something, what would it be? “It’s going to be alright so, keep studying hard because it’ll all be worth it in the end. Also, Media Studies WAS the right choice” (I was awarded an A*!).
  • How do you unwind? Spending time with my husband, friends and family. I love spending time in Derby – my beloved city and discovering new eateries. Whenever I go out for a meal or wherever I shop, I always try to support local, independent businesses, many of which are my clients – I like the idea of ‘giving back’. I also enjoy running and being a sponsor of the Ramathon gives me a lot of motivation.

Derby Printer Celebrates Best Month!

Posted on: April 4th, 2017 by Jilly Rapley No Comments

We Are Celebrating Our 6th Birthday And Best Month Ever!

The brainchild of ‘print evangelist’ Yvonne Gorman, Essential Print Services already boasts an impressive business record for so young a company, with a staff and year-on-year sales growth.

Not only that but Yvonne herself is already a renowned business figurehead. Named as one of a handful of “Leading Ladies” in the local press, Yvonne has appeared on ITV Central News, visited No. 10 Downing Street and continues a national appointment as Small Business Saturday UK Champion.

It’s been a roller-coaster ride for the past six years, but, according to Yvonne, she wouldn’t have it any other way. Yvonne says: “I can’t believe the business is six years old! We’ve achieved such a lot and what better way to celebrate than with our best ever sales month – it is perfect timing. The Essential Team’s hard work is paying off. People keep telling me that print is dead, but I’ve seen no evidence of this – we just keep continuing to grow and I can’t see it stopping anytime soon.”

“In March we absolutely smashed our sales target and achieved our best month EVER! It was a phenomenal way to celebrate our 6th birthday. I certainly could not have achieved all that by myself. A round of applause must go to Lee, Katie and Jilly for their hard work and of course, to our amazing customers who support us on our journey,” said Yvonne, owner of Essential Print Services.

Yvonne counts one of her biggest successes in the past year as finding her ‘dream team’. Lee Johnson has been heading up Essential Print Services’ studio for just under a year and is responsible for checking the hundreds of client files a month to ensure the best possible end, for which the company is renowned.

Katie Fitzpatrick joined the business as a “Print Angel” and helps Yvonne to look after Essential Print Services’ loyal customer base by providing fantastic customer service – the hundreds of testimonials they receive is a testament to this.

The most recent appointment was during National Apprenticeship Week in March this year when Jilly Rapley joined the business as a Print Assistant. Yvonne will be working with fellow Pride Park business; Babington Business College, to help Jilly complete her apprenticeship and the newest recruit has already made a big impact on the business.

“Having the right people in your business is crucial. They need to understand that outstanding quality and amazing customer service is paramount. Printing is hard work and some jobs are technically challenging so, what is also important to me that I’m part of a team who can fun in the office and enjoy what they do. There are days when my face aches from laughing so much,” Yvonne Gorman adds.

Yvonne also continues to work hard in her role as part of the Small Business Saturday UK campaign, for which she was appointed one of only 10 ‘champions’ in the country for the third year running.

Her business ethos isn’t just about financial growth: she is also a driving force behind several not-for-profit business groups in Derbyshire, including Derby Hub and the Hallmark Group, as well as being a trustee of the Me & Dee Charity, which supports children and adults with life-limiting illnesses and military personnel suffering from PTSD. Essential Print Services is also proud to sponsor Derby’s iconic half marathon, the Ramathon for the fourth year running.

She says: “I feel both privileged and proud to have created a sustainable business that not only employs local people but that supports many other East Midlands firms, as well as my local community. I am so excited about the future of my business and can’t wait to see how my team develops.”

“I’m also thrilled to be able to prove that, despite setting up in the middle of a recession and with the strong digital competition that the print industry now faces, printers can thrive and that Essential Print Services is one of them.”

See what we got up to during our birthday celebrations, like our Facebook page and take a sneaky peek.
