Small business is thriving in Derby

Posted on: December 10th, 2018 by Yvonne Gorman No Comments

On Saturday 1st December, the Derby business community united to celebrate Small Business Saturday UK at the University of Derby’s Enterprise Centre.

Over 100 local independent companies attended the event with those exhibiting ranging from new start-ups to established names in the local business community; all uniting to highlight and celebrate the success of small businesses in Derby and the surrounding area.

This came following a momentous week for one of the champions of small business in Derby. Yvonne Gorman (Managing Director of Essential Print Services, Small Business Saturday UK Champion and also a founding member of Derby Hub), plays a key role in organising the Small Business Saturday UK events in Derby and was invited to Downing Street on Wednesday 28th November in recognition of her work for the cause.

Yvonne commented: “It’s been quite the week for small business in Derby! It was an absolute honour to represent the city and the companies within it when I was invited to Downing Street. This was the fifth Small Business Saturday UK to be held in Derby and it was our biggest and best yet! It was great to see so many people from the local business community celebrating each other’s successes and championing the great things that we can achieve by working together.”

The Small Business Saturday UK event was opened by The Mayor of the City of Derby, Councillor Mike Carr, who was joined by Pauline Latham OBE MP, and Margaret Beckett DBE MP. It was supported by Derby Hub and The University of Derby, which enabled attendance to be completely free.

Delegates had the opportunity to network and showcase their businesses before attending a series of talks, presentations and discussions which began with a welcome from Julie Stone, Head of the University of Derby Online Learning and Martin Jinks, Partner of Nelsons Solicitors.

Martin commented “it was the most productive four hours of support being given to small businesses and celebration of their work in Derby I have ever witnessed. Nelsons were proud to have been involved and join in the sponsorship of the event. It has re-energised us in our continuing support for local businesses.”

The University of Derby is pleased to support Small Business Saturday UK. It was fabulous to see so many businesses at our Enterprise Centre on Saturday. Many of those businesses are run and staffed by our alumni, for example, Ask The Chameleon one of this year’s top 100. This makes us extremely proud. Our students also volunteered on the day, including students from the marketing society that covered all the social media on the day. We are committed to supporting business across the city, county and region and are looking forward to working with Yvonne and the Small Business Saturday team over the next year,” said Bev Crighton, External Engagement Lead at the University of Derby.

“As a director and member of the Derby Hub, I’m proud that we were able to put on a Small Business Saturday event that resulted in standing room only at the University of Derby’s prestigious Enterprise Centre. Every year the Small Business Saturday event in Derby gets bigger & louder. The atmosphere at this year’s event was inspiring. I know the members of Derby Hub are keen to keep the momentum moving and to be involved with Small Business Saturday for the foreseeable future,” said Owen Conti, Managing Director of Code 56 and Director of Derby Hub Ltd.

Guest speaker, Rachel Hayward from Ask The Chameleon, then spoke about her experiences as a small business and her recent success as being selected as one of this year’s Small Biz Sat 100. This was followed by a lively panel Q&A session and then 45-second pitches from ten companies, which were randomly selected to be Golden Ticket holders and to have the opportunity to present their businesses to all visitors.

Support for the campaign came from 90% of local councils including Derby City Council who offered free car parking at the city’s Chapel Street Car Park on the day.
Small Business Saturday UK is a government-backed initiative. It is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which celebrates small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and to support businesses in their communities.

ABOUT SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY UK

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-commercial campaign, which celebrates small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and to support businesses in their communities.

In its sixth year, Small Business Saturday is the UK’s most successful small business campaign, which this year saw an estimated £812m spent with small businesses across the UK on Small Business Saturday UK, 8% more than last year.

The day itself takes place on the first Saturday in December each year, but with an impact that lasts all year round.

Both #SmallBizSatUK and #SmallBusinessSaturday were in the UK’s top five Twitter trends throughout the day. More than 250 small business organisations supported the nationwide initiative, including the Federation of Small Businesses. Politicians including the Prime Minister, the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Mayor of London all publicly supported Small Business Saturday. Support for the campaign came from 90% of local councils – a three per cent increase on 2017 – calling for the nation to shop local and support the 5.6 million small businesses across the country.

The official countdown to Small Business Saturday UK, included a daily celebration of the ‘Small Biz 100’ through social media. The Small Biz 100 are a selection of some of the best small businesses in the UK, and have been chosen to help spotlight the success of such companies to raise awareness about the positive impact they can have.

Small Business Saturday was originally founded by American Express in the U.S. in 2010. American Express remains the principal supporter of the campaign in the UK, as part of its on-going commitment to encourage consumers to shop small.

To celebrate, we have made a donation to the same value as their order to their chosen charity; YMCA Burton. The Timms Team participated in the YMCA sleep out on Friday and this donation will contribute towards their fundraising.

Big thanks to Timms and all of our lovely clients for your continued custom and support.

Posted on: October 26th, 2018 by Yvonne Gorman No Comments

Small Business Saturday UK Champion, Yvonne Gorman of Essential Print Services, has joined forces with local business support group; Derby Hub Ltd and University of Derby to host this year’s free event on Saturday 1st December.

Derby Hub will host an extended version of their business meeting, which will include a business exhibition of local companies, networking opportunities and a presentation by Derby Hub members about the benefit of collaboration entitled, ‘Stronger Together’.

The event will take place at the University of Derby’s Enterprise Centre on Bridge Street, and because of the generous support from the University and Derby Hub, the entire event will be completely free to attend. Delegates will also have the chance to win a ‘Golden Ticket’ to pitch their business in front of the entire business congregation.

“The University of Derby is proud to be an integral part of the business community in our city and region, and we’re pleased to support the Small Business Saturday UK event. There will be opportunities for businesses to engage with our students, many of whom are aspiring entrepreneurs currently taking part in our ‘Be the Boss’ programme, which encourages students to start their own business,” said Bev Crighton, External Engagement Lead at the University of Derby.

“It is fortuitous that Derby Hub is hosting this year’s event because, not only does it boast to have one of the Small Business Saturday UK Champions as a founder member (Yvonne Gorman), but also, one of this year’s Small Biz Sat 100; Rachel Hayward from Ask The Chameleon,” explained Sarah Loates, Derby Hub Director and Managing Director of Loates HR.

“I’m excited about collaborating with Derby Hub and the University of Derby for this year’s event. I am proud to be one of the founder members of Derby Hub, and I’m passionate about the support and networking opportunities it provides for companies. The event will showcase how Derby Hub and other local organisations can help Derby’s SMEs grow and prosper,” said Yvonne Gorman, Managing Director of Essential Print Services and Small Business Saturday UK Champion.

“Derby Hub members have been involved in Small Business Saturday UK for several years now, the Derby Hub Directors thought that it seemed like a natural progression to get more involved with the event and build on the fantastic successes of the previous years. With the help of Derby Hub and the University of Derby, 2018 stands to be the most exciting Small Business Saturday Derby event to date,” added Craig Barker, Derby Hub Director and Managing Director of Creative Agency; Koobr.

“The culture of Derby Hub is centred around businesses collaborating and supporting one another, which is why it made perfect sense for the Derby Hub to get involved with Small Business Saturday UK. All of our members know that collaboration is about achieving the extraordinary, and working together with the Small Business Saturday UK campaign we’re able to pool our resources and make an even bigger noise about what small and local businesses achieve in Derby & the surrounding area,” concluded Owen Conti, Managing Director of Code 56, fellow Derby Hub Board Member and Marketing Derby’s Rising Star 2018.

Other local business support organisations will also be on-hand to talk to such as Derby City Council, East Midlands Chamber, the University of Derby, FSB, the Growth Hub and the D2N2 Business Starter Programme.

Promotional Items Under £1

Promotional Items for tight purse strings

Its always good practice to review your marketing collateral and ensure that all the items in your marketing toolkit are up-to-date and represents you in the best light possible.

For some small businesses or those who have a limited budget, the task of sourcing cost-effective, quality promotional items can be a real struggle.

That’s why we’ve taken the pain out of this for you by presenting our best sellers for under £1!

PENS – from 50p each
Get into the hands of your clients with branded pens.

Our most popular pen shape is the Contour. It has a good range of funky colours available. In our experience, they look best with just a 1-colour print; silver is smart because it complements the silver fixings but, we will print whatever colour you wish. Secondly, you can split the minimum order quantity of 250 between two barrel colours. If your logo is two colours say, red and blue, you can print your colour in white or silver and have 125 red pens and 125 blue pens – giving you a choice of pen colours when you hand them to prospects and customers.

How much? For 250 pens, with a 1-colour print, they are 50p each.

If you’d like us to quote for more than 250 or if you’d like a different pen shape, chat with us online.

NOTEPADS – from 58p each
There’s nothing quite like crossing off a tricky task or having a handy-sized pad to jot down moments of genius. So, why not give our your own, branded notepads for your contacts to do just that?

Our most popular size is A6 (105mm x 148mm) or DL (99mm x 210mm). Our prices include a full-colour print, so there are no limitations to the design. Each pad contains 50 sheets of white, uncoated paper and has a backing board.

Top tip; get funky by adding a textured image or pattern in the background.

How much? For 250 A6-sized pads, they are 58p each. The DL size pads, which are similar to jotters, are 68p each. This price includes 30-mins artwork setup cost so, all you have to do is send us your logo, tell us what you’d like your notepads to look like (roughly*) and we’ll do the rest. *If you don’t have any ideas – that’s fine because we have plenty!

If you’d like us to quote for more than 250 or if you’d like a different size, chat with us online.

STICKY NOTES – from 98p each
Make your message stick with branded sticky notes.

If you host events, conferences or training activities, sticky notes can be beneficial for group sessions because they reinforce a message from your training program or just simply, remind delegates of your brand. People often take them back to the office, which makes your advertising last even longer.

Top tip; allow enough space for someone to write. Many designs we see are very cluttered and don’t allow very much room for note-taking.

How much? For 250 square pads (72mm), they are 98p each. This price includes artwork setup so, all you have to do is send us your logo, and we’ll do the rest. It won’t matter how many colours are in your logo because the price includes full-colour printing.

If you’d like us to quote for more than 250 or if you’d like a different size, chat with us online.

GREETING CARDS OR CHRISTMAS CARDS – from 46p each
Whatever the season, make it the season to be jolly by having a stock of branded greetings cards ready to send. Have some cards, ready-to-post makes sending a celebratory note or wishing someone a happy birthday, a lot easier. Not only will you look super organised but, super professional too with cards that have your branding printed on them.

How much? For A6 size (same size as a postcard), they are 46p each. For A5 size (half of an A4), they are only 4p more (50p each). Prices not only include full-colour printing, inside and out but white envelopes too! To create a bespoke design for you, add on £40 to cover 1 hour’s studio time.

If you’d like a full price list, chat with us online.

BALLOONS – from 25p each
Whatever the occasion, make it go with a bang with printed balloons. For a corporate event, branded balloons will make you look super cool.

Top Tip: Split your quantity between a choice of base colours, and you’ll make the venue even more colourful. As long as the print colour stays the same, it will not cost any extra.

How much? For 250 balloons printed one colour, one side, 44p each (choose up to two base colours) or stock up with 500 balloons at 25p each (choose up to four base colours).

If you’d like a full price list, chat with us online.

With these top five promotional items, it just goes to show that there is something to fit most budgets and look awesome in the process.
