Small is most definitely, mighty – says Derby Printer

Essential Print Services co-hosts one of the country’s single biggest events for Small Business Saturday UK.

Here I am, Yvonne Gorman of Essential Print Services in Derby.

Yvonne Gorman of Essential Print Services in Derby, getting ready for this year’s event

Well, it’s certainly true what they say, good things really do come in small packages and small, local businesses are no exception to the rule!

Saturday 5th December saw an army of small business supporters from across Derby and Derbyshire descend on the Council House in the city centre to attend the eagerly anticipated “Small Business Saturday”.

For those of you that don’t know, just to recap, it’s the one day in the year when small, local and independently owned enterprises come together. Its a chance for them to take centre stage in showcasing what they have to offer as well as highlighting the valued contribution that they each make to the UK High Street.

Being only one of twenty “Small Business Saturday Champions” in the UK, it was my job to help spread word of the event as far and as wide as possible. Judging by the response and the turnout on the day, I did a pretty good job, even if I do say so myself!

Printed items from Essential Print Services, Derby

Just a few of the items printed for the event, including banners, posters, goodie bags and even printed cups!

To show my company’s commitment to the event, Essential Print Services supplied all the banners, signage, printed programmes, flyers, pledge cards and even printed goodie bags, completely free of charge.

Not only did owners, traders and service providers of Derby attend the event, we were also joined by none other than Dame Margaret Beckett (MP) and Councillor Martin Rawson (Deputy Leader of Derby City Council). They braved the elements to come out and show their support and delivered keynote speeches to the crowd that had amassed.

The day kicked off bright and early as there was a jam packed agenda of talks and workshops for all attendees, giving them all valuable insights into how to make their business stand out from the crowd but above all, how to be successful in today’s testing trading conditions.

After key business figures within the community had imparted their knowledge onto the keen ears of all that were there, the day came to a close with an exciting prize draw with two lucky winners walking away with a combined prize value of over £2000.

Thank you to all those who donated prizes including Portixol Relocations who donated an overnight stay at The Birchover Residences. Thanks also go to Derby accountancy firm, David Coleman & Co, who donated a year’s worth of accounting software and local jeweller, Equine Diamonds, who donated a pair of exquisite earrings.

In a show of their support, Derby City Council offered free parking to anyone visiting the city centre, both on street and in all council run car parks which enabled anyone who wanted to come along and join in, to do so.

Derby Business TV was out in force, with Neale Lewis interviewing just a few of the many people who exhibited and visited.

Now for the numbers…
Official statistics show that in the 24 hours following the event, an estimated £623 million was spent with small businesses across the UK! This number is a whopping increase of approximately £119 million on last year’s total and an increase in spending of 24%. WOW!

The event was also a huge success across social media platforms with over 100,000 tweets published on the day that had a combined reach of more than 25 million people. AMAZING!

Almost half (48%) of consumers who were aware of the day and who shopped in a small business on the 5th December, said they spent more than usual, with 34% saying they had spent at least a quarter (25%) more than they would usually on a typical Saturday. If that isn’t a result, then I don’t know what is!

With a resounding success reported by everyone who came along on the day, I can’t wait until next year which is set to be even bigger and even better! Bring it on!

Top Tips for Christmas Print Preparation

Posted on: September 25th, 2015 by Yvonne Gorman No Comments

There’s no time like the Present

Christmas Preparation

Christmas seems to come around earlier and earlier with each passing year and images of Chestnuts roasting on an open fire, are far from the forefronts of minds when it still feels like summer outside.

“In actual fact, now is the perfect time to be thinking about your printing requirements not only over the festive period but also well into 2016” says Yvonne Gorman, Print Evangelist and owner of Essential Print Services, Derby.

Being prepared for Christmas printing early is no bad thing, as it leaves time in the schedule that can be used on other areas of a business that demand attention. Not only this, but it’s a good demonstration to existing customers and prospects alike of a businesses amazing organisational skills!

The earlier you start to spread the festive cheer, the more memorable a Christmas Card campaign or promotion is likely to be. So don’t be afraid to break the mould and set the precedence by being the first to get your seasonal salutations out there.

Being organised also pays dividends when it comes to reducing the stress levels, after all, the festivities are a time for peace on earth and goodwill to all men, which isn’t always achievable if campaign deadlines are looming and the pressure is on.

So, how do you go about creating a successful Christmas campaign or promotion when the sun has still got its hat on?

If you’re struggling to channel your inner festive fairy, work with your creative team sooner rather than later to create a yuletide masterpiece worthy of good King Wenceslas himself.

The team at Essential Print Services Derby, lead by Print Evangelist Yvonne Gorman, have a genuine passion for all things print as well as all things festive. They would love to discuss your print requirements, large or small, for the holiday period and beyond.

For more information on how the “Print Angels” can help you to get your Christmas party started, why not contact them today on 01332 418 377? You can also chat to them online (in office hours), just see the chat bar below.

Derby Printer calls to support small businesses

"Think Big, Shop Small" says Yvonne Gorman, Owner of Essential Print Services and Small Business Saturday UK Champion

“Think Big, Shop Small” says Yvonne Gorman, Owner of Essential Print Services and Small Business Saturday UK Champion

Being a business owner myself, I fully appreciate the blood, sweat and tears that go in to making a success of your venture and also just how hard it can be to get your name and product out there in to the public arena. I’ve learnt my lessons along the way, gaining valuable insights in to the things that work and the things that definitely don’t’, helping me to understand the challenges that smaller businesses can face but also how they can be overcome.

Everyone has to start somewhere and you un-doubtly want to make an impression (after all there are bills to pay), so how do you go about doing this and doing it well in a world of big brands, big names and even bigger budgets? Enter the “Small Business Saturday” Campaign!

As a firm believer in supporting the smaller and local businesses of Derby, I have been chosen to take on the role of Small Business Saturday Champion for the region! “Big deal” I hear you say but having been chosen with only 19 others from around the UK, I think it’s definitely something worth shouting about!

So what is it all about?
Well, the purpose of the campaign is to raise awareness and the profiles of smaller businesses and the necessity of local support. The campaign also highlights the substantial contribution that smaller businesses make to the UK economy as a whole.

Tell me more…
On Saturday 05th December the spotlight is firmly placed on the small businesses of the UK with an estimated 5million business taking part in the initiative. It’s my mission to unite the small business of Derby and Derbyshire in a show of strength and solidarity, to demonstrate the diverse range of products and services available in and around the region and indeed the East Midlands. It’s also a chance for local people to show their support by visiting their local retailers and service providers to see for themselves first hand, the benefits and advantages of supporting the smaller enterprises.

In 2014, the campaign saw in the region of 16.5 million people spending with smaller business in the UK on this one day alone, bringing in a staggering £504 million worth of revenue. This was a 20% increase on the estimated 2.7 million people who shopped locally previously in 2013.

Save the date – Saturday 5th December 2015

In the run up to the main event on the 05th December, there will be a series of free to attend workshops held up and down the country, led by small business owners and Entrepreneurs. These workshops will be broadcast via the Small Business Saturday YouTube Channel so don’t worry if you are unable to attend. You’ll also be able to follow the workshops through live Twitter Q&A sessions.

Not to be outdone by the rest of the UK, Essential Print Services, together with Derby City Council will be hosting its own event on the day at the Council House. There’ll be a Small Business Exhibition, free workshops and inspiring talks from some of Derby’s leading and award-winning business owners. It will be a celebration of Derby’s small businesses and everyone is welcome.

OK, how do I get Involved…
